We’ll Queer the Census, Will You!?

LGBT, NewsBites, Society & Culture — By Speak Equal on March 17, 2010 at 8:01 am

We know it’s a little clichéd – but here’s what we want to tell the census: We’re here. We’re queer. And we want you to ask us about it.

It’s crazy – the U.S. Census Bureau wants an accurate count of everyone in the country – but there’s no question in the survey that asks if you are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender.

You read that right: LGBT people are basically invisible in the survey that is supposed to reflect the diversity of America’s population – and that’s a big problem.

The data collected impacts issues critical to every American – like our health care, our economic stability, and even our safety. And when LGBT people aren’t counted, then we also don’t count when it comes to services, resources … you name it.

It’s past time to Queer the Census! Sign the petition and demand that the census ask the question and count everyone!

Listen – I am a lesbian and I'm not afraid to tell people. I am definitely out and I am pro gay rights!!! I vote that way and speak my mind. However I would like to point of the irony of wanting to be counted as a people. One of the primary problems in this country is the division of one group from another. We are all people and we all have different traits and similarities. I feel that we are over-classified. I am black/ african american/ caucasion/ mutt and I am always prompted to categorize my race. I think it is ridiculous that we cannot all just be human. If that were the case gay rights would not be an issue because “couples” would be the ones to marry. The color of your skin, who you f&%k, your religion or lack thereof, and how curly your hair are do not matter to me and they should not matter to the federal government either.
