The Fire and Reason

Like most of you I was watching the 2009 Logo NewNowNext Music Awards, but I couldn’t help but notice something. While the show itself was filled with a jubilant vibe that only the very gay could pull off  (pun intended), there was a slight aura of sadness in the midst of it all. It may have just been me, but every seemed to have this “we’re doing this award show because none of our nominees will get any real exposure in the mainstream vibe.”

Yep folks, melancholy all around. *cue depressing background music*

Then the performances started and I heard it.

“The Fire and Reason” burst onstage in a flurry of energy and the first thing that I had to wonder was “Why the hell had no one heard of them before?”

I was listening to their newest single “Do It Again”, with its  heavy bass and mad crazy synthesizers and realized it sounded like the brainchild  of “Peaches” and “Larry Tee”.  The heavy percussion gave it that “indie rock” feel but the synthesizers were very “hardcore electronica.”

Upon investigating further (I was totally obsessed by now) I realized why no one had really heard of them. They have released a few EPs, “Shut Up and Dance,” and “Do It Again,”), but for the most part they kept a very low profile.  Songs like the “Sugar Koma” and “Presta Atencao” never got the recognition they rightfully deserved, as serious techno club bangers.

But this suited me just fine, the underground gets the best material anyway, and after watching that performance, i realized that Lola Perez (the lead singer) was quickly on her way to the top. I guess staying underground does have its perks after all.
