Activists Address Church-Inspired Hate, Anti-Gay Rants
LGBT, NewsBites — By Speak Equal on December 7, 2009 at 5:18 pmLed by Pastor Joseph Tolton of Rehoboth Temple, a group of LGBT activists spoke out against the hatred and rejection spewed from church pulpits across America. The activists purchased a full-age ad in Metro NY, which issued a call to LIVE for Black LGBT people, and spoke against what the group called, “spiritual violence.”
In addition, the ad directly addressed Donnie McClurkin, a so-called “ex-gay” minister and prominent Grammy Award-winning gospel musician. At a recent Church of God In Christ Convention, McClurkin referred to gays as “vampires” and railed against openly gay youth, calling young gay men, “broken and effeminate.” Mcclurkin claimed homosexuality was a perversion of God’s will and believed it to be a failure of church and society stating, “I see feminine men, feminine boys, everywhere I go … No, don’t applaud ‘cuz it ain’t funny. It’s because we failed. I see them everywhere.”
Despite his messages of hate, the ad states: “We love you brother and in ways the traditional church cannot because we understand your pain. You are not a man who loves men because of being molested as a child. That grave and despicable tragedy broke your spirit and damaged your mind; however, it did not have the capacity to change your DNA. There is so much love in our community for you. We want to see you healed and whole [...] ”
