Get To Know Us
“Speak Equal is a small, but energetic human rights organization. We work to unite, educate, and motivate the West Michigan LGBT community and it’s allies through quality, all-inclusive programming, community outreach and advocacy, and dialog.”
MISSION
Uniting the West Michigan LGBTQI community and its allies in an effort to promote equality, education, and inclusion for all people regardless of ability, age, gender, race, religion, sex, or sexual orientation.
HISTORY
Speak Equal was founded in January 2009 with the original intention of sharing news and information regarding the Human Rights Movement and LGBTQ-specific issues. Hot topics included transgendered inclusion, anti-discrimination laws, marriage equality, same-sex benefits, adoption rights, and more. However, shortly after beginning this journalistic endeavor, it became clear that our community was in peril, and needed so much more.
Speak Equal’s founder, Brooke Murphy, has always been passionate about social justice, community development, and activism; and she is committed to ensuring equal rights for all people.
Speak Equal approaches the Human Rights Movement from the perspective of inclusion and with what we like to call, the “Community Friendly Philosophy.” This is the idea that equality and social justice are beneficial to our entire community fabric. Not until we unite and support one another as an entire community, beautiful and amazing for all our differences, will true progress and understanding be achieved. No one should suffer inequality, pain, discrimination, or harassment due to their differences. We are all part of one family, the Human Family, and as brothers and sisters, we all share the responsibility of developing and maintaining our community.
Speak Equal’s rallies, programs, protests, petitions, fundraisers, and other events are all-inclusive and focused on moving our entire community one step further toward the goal of equality for all.
